JavaScript, a Multi-Paradigm Programming Language

JavaScript is an open source cross-platform scripting language widely used to ensure interactive and dynamic content on web pages. Inside of host environment JavaScript can provide programmatic control over the objects of its components. The most typical host environment for JavaScript is browser, but the interpreters can also be found in Yahoo's Widget Engine, SVG images, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Acrobat as well as in different server-side environments.

JavaScript is multi-paradigm and supports functional, object-oriented, event-based, and procedural programming. JavaScript can be used for front-end and back-end development.

JavaScript ensures a number of the following benefits:

  • JavaScript reduces server traffic because it validates user input in the browser before the data is submitted to the server.
  • It provides immediate feedback to the website's visitors and they don't need to reload web pages just to receive error messages if they have forgotten to enter some information.
  • JavaScript enables richer user interfaces where the content changes on drag and drop gestures, mouse hover, and animations.

JavaScript includes a core set of language elements like statements, control structures, and operators. The syntax of JavaScript is based on the C and Java languages and many structures from those languages can be applied to JavaScript too. It also has a standard object library that includes Math, Date, and Array. JavaScript can be extended when it is used for a variety of purposes and supplemented by additional objects.

Client-side JavaScript is the most common form of the language. It’s rendered in the browser and doesn’t require compilation. With JavaScript, interactive content can be included in HTML pages which would be static without it.

Server-side JavaScript such as in NodeJS ensures back-end access to servers, file systems, and databases. NodeJS can be a good solution for web applications that require data streaming, I/O bound operations, etc. Server-side JavaScript allows to use the same language on the client and the server.
